[Envy's sleeping habits have gotten onto a much more normal schedule while they're traveling, if only because they can't hike through the woods at night and after a full day of hiking, they're usually tired enough that sleep just sort of happens.]
[So he was not expecting to be woken up by the SCREAM coming out of the speakers next to his head. He sits bolt upright with a shout before he actually scoops the 'Gear up.]
[HEY LOOK, MEMLOSS ENVY, IT'S YOUR FAVORITE TEAM-MATE EVER!!]
[He's dressed in human clothes, like the ones he'd been abducted in that first time he and Envy had met: a baggy shirt with a Poochyena on it, and big blocky text reading WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?]
[He seems to be in a small attic space, and there's a weird wooden thumping noise coming from off-camera.]
[Envy has barely figured out how this thing works, but he knows by now it's some kind of advanced phone. One where you can see the person on the other end.]
[When it buzzes in his hands and something that says 'Answer' pops up, it takes him a second to figure out what to do, but he manages to pick up. He certainly wasn't expecting the person on the other end to be Wrath.]
[Ugh. But better than nothing, in this situation. Maybe he can get some answers.]
[...his human?]
What are you talking about? Just kill the human, what does it matter? There's something more important going on.
[If someone had told her last night that less than 24 hours later, Envy was going to be tied to a chair in the hotel room, she would first think they were kidding, and then think that they had vastly overestimated the kinkiness of their general romantic situation right now.]
[But there he is.]
[And it's barely past lunchtime, god.]
... Look, you're gonna have to let one of us take care of that wrist sooner or later.
[With three people available to keep watch, it made sense that only one person at a time should have to deal with the snide remarks and occasional screeching temper tantrum, so Alphonse had (for the moment) gone to complete his original errand at the Center and Joker was signing into a room down in the lobby. Which left Heather, sitting on the bed across from him with her chin on her hand.]
[For the moment, Envy has wound down from his latest cycle of screeching death threats and gone right into the sullen, suspicious glaring stage.]
[The more the adrenaline of the fight and subsequent capture had ebbed away, the more it had been replaced by the awful throbbing in his sprained wrist. Not a terrible one, all things considered, even as red and swollen as it looks. But for someone who isn't used to feeling pain for more than a minute or two at most? The way this pain is lingering makes it impossible to ignore.]
[But worse than pain would be accepting help from the humans who are definitely enemies. So he just sneers at her, eyes narrowed.]
I don't have to do anything.
Besides, I don't see why you'd ask when you could just call the other two back and tackle me to the ground again.
[When Lust calls Envy, she isn't even looking at her 'gear screen. She's looking over it. She's on her hotel room bed, against the headboard.]
Envy...did you happen to awaken to...
An unexpected visitor....?
[Can anyone else even see him? Why is she seeing him? Is this because she had a nice time with a man the other night? Some...manifestation of guilt? Did she ingest berries without realizing it? It's not Friday....]
[Envy picks up, but he's not really ever looking at his screen for long either, repeatedly glancing at something off to the side. He looks incredibly tense.]
[She's not real, he keeps telling himself, it's not really her, but that only helps so much.]
[Seeing as this is shark house, it would be appropriate for the Jaws theme to be playing as Henry made his way up to Envy's room. But that doesn't happen. Instead, he just leans around the corner, Litwick still on his shoulder, and spots his friend.]
[Envy was engaged in the monumentally important tasks of giving Guglehopf a bellyrub and deciding if he wanted to play Tetris or not. Needless to say, he looks up as soon as Henry pokes his head in. Henry looks...happier than he has been? About something, Envy doesn't know what. But that's got to be a good thing, right?]
Here's the first bit of our new radio drama! Casting is listed at top, we'll record through the week. It's called The Black Cofagrigus of Death, and it's appropriately spooky.
[Well that's kind of an alarming question to ask. Envy immediately starts running down the list of people they know in his mind, wondering who it was. He doubts she'd be getting a gift basket for some random stranger.]
Uh...France used to get ice cream for me whenever something messed me up, but I don't think that could go in a basket.
What about something else sweet? Everyone likes sweet things.
Darkness flew quick and silent to the Shark House in the orange of dusk. He had known about Walter's intentions to evolve him for quite a while but hadn't realised it would be so soon. He wasn't against the idea. He would be larger and stronger, capable of even more than he currently was.
The only thing that concerned him about evolving was Lyra's reaction. Would she be put off by his size? Would she dislike him as a Honchkrow? Of course it would do nothing to sway Walter's opinion on the matter but it would be reassuring to have her support.
He landed in one of the trees and began to call to her, transferring the gleaming bracelet he had 'found' to his talons. "Lyra! Lyra!"
Lyra, unaware of the news she's going to be getting from her love, is perched on the corner of the roof opposite of his tree. But while she doesn't see him, she certainly hears him calling out for her.
She takes off right away, bangles clinking together as she flies.
"Darkness!"
What a lovely surprise! As soon as she pinpoints the tree he's in, she goes in to land alongside him on the branch.
"You've come to see me! I wasn't expecting you! Oh, and what's that in your claws? Why, it's nearly as nice to look at as you are!"
[He's not sure how concerned he should be--for people like the lot of them, in this place, emotional quandaries aren't completely out of the ordinary.]
[Still, he wants to know what's up.]
Are we talking closer to moral dilemma like taking the the last brownie or moral dilemma like whoops I murdered a guy?
[It's a good thing he was costuming and not rehearsing, because that means at least he isn't in a leotard when he comes in on Lucky, the Houndoom skidding through the glass doors fast enough that he very nearly ran right into them instead. Envy jumps off of Lucky's back without paying any attention to the disapproving stare of the nurse behind the counter, just looking for Heather. He goes straight for her the moment he spots her.]
[...and which one of his humans is Wrath referring to?]
What about...them?
[Because Henry's in the hospital but Heather's actually around, so there might have been an opportunity for something to happen there. What could either of them have done to get Wrath to sound so serious about it?]
Following the chaos with Henry, Darkness had been kept separated from his beloved. First with Walter fleeing to the Sevii Islands and now establishing a home in Ecruteak City, life had prevented him from seeing his dear children and his darling mate. Even if it was dangerous and the human inhabitants sought revenge on him for their friend's violent and stupid actions, a mere fear would not keep him away from them! He flew as swift as he could, only resting when pushed to exhaustion to reach the Shark House as the sky turned black and the stars came out.
He arrived, not wasting a moment to catch his breath as he spread his wings and cried out with a deep, bellowing call. "My love!" He shouted, "My darlings! Pieces of my heart! Come to me, I have missed you so!"
Lyra has been in an absolutely terrible mood ever since the Incident and Walter's subsequent leaving. Not even bribes of shiny objects have made a dent in her attitude towards the humans of the house, because of course it's all the human nonsense that's keeping her beloved away from her and her children. And if it hadn't been for said flock, it would have been nigh-unbearable.
She's overheard mutterings of something, some plan, to be done about all of this, but until it actually happens she's not going to believe it.
The house is all asleep, and she's busy looking the children over before a nightly expedition into the city when suddenly! She hears him!
She's first in the air with a cry, followed by all the raucous calls of the rest as they explode upward to circle around Darkness' larger form in the air.
"You've come back! I didn't think it would be so soon!"
I swear, you're using that thing as revenge for us bringing home the ball pit....
[SIGH. But, he still has to cave to baby sister's request. He has no choice.]
Let's see...mostly I've been dreaming about Diglett since we got out of that cave...but I did have one the other night where I was on the trapeze and it kept breaking, and I had to glue it together, but the glue wouldn't come out of the bottle...and it was underwater. That too. There were Staryu.
[It's taken time to build up the courage for this.]
[Obviously Henry's whole... situation had shoved theirs sort of out of mind for awhile (poor timing all around), but even if that hadn't happened... Heather's not really sure it wouldn't have taken this long anyway.]
[Talking to Lust had helped, but honestly, no amount of talk with someone else was ever going to make this easy.]
Hey, uh... Envy?
[It's getting towards evening-- or a February evening where the sun is still setting at 5, anyway-- and Heather's leaning into the laundry room. It's the first chance she's had all day to grab him without anybody else around.]
[Things haven't been weird since The Incident, or at least not what HEATHER would describe as 'weird', but they have been... well, a little different, and a lot 'we don't really know how to act with each other right now so we're just trying our best???' Weird or not, though, it's... it's fuckin' sad and she doesn't like it and the only person who can fix it is her.]
[It's true that while they haven't been distant, definitely not, or acted particularly awkward around each other...things have still been not entirely the same.]
[And Envy hasn't had any idea what to do about it.]
[He's not expecting it to happen right now, while he's folding laundry of all things, so when he looks up at her voice he's entirely unsuspecting. But her expression...]
[The day had not started off great for Henry Townshend.]
[When he got in from the night shift and tried to make himself a bedtime egg sandwich, he burned his hand. And then he noticed there was an unfamiliar Furfrou harassing the pool sharks. He went outside to get the hose to shoo the fluffy creature away when he had a sudden shift in perspective.]
[Not the kind where he imagined what it would be like to be a dog suddenly getting sprayed with a hose, it was the kind were suddenly the hose hung on the wall what seemed to be miles above his head. Grass rose behind him in tall green arcs from the divides between the patio stones.]
[It was then that Henry knew that today was going to suck.]
[It's not more than five minutes before Henry's day takes an even sharper downward turn.]
[And that turn lands next to him in the grass, in the form of glittery black feathers, a big yellow beak, and one big red eye tilted sideways down at him to get a closer look.]
[ Walter was expecting to get through to Darkness and, admittedly, wanted to be able to show the bird his achievements rather than just text Envy with a message to pass on. So Envy's received a video from Walter today. And he looked...vastly different to his appearances before. He's gotten a haircut, back to the length it was when he arrived. His coat was nowhere in sight; he was wearing a long sleeve top with a Vulpix on it and the words 'Can you not?' on a strip of ribbon, surrounded by wildflowers. He had a pair of dark blue jeans on. Without his coat, the Saint's Medallion he wore was obvious on his chest. He actually looked like a living twenty-something year old.
In addition to Walter's make-over, he was on a beach. The background was a hidden cove, but in the distance are the crowded shores of Cianwood City, packed with beach-goers...so of course Walter headed out to the driftwood graves to be alone. ]
Hello Envy. I assumed Darkness is at your house. I need to speak with him.
[...WELL THEN. Envy's eyebrows go up with surprise when he first picks up the phone--he almost wouldn't have recognized Walter.]
[Although instead of the house or Goldenrod, the background of Envy's own video is of a steep paved bike path in the backround of the little rest area that he and Heather had pulled off into to catch their respective breaths.]
Oh, he's at the house alright, unless he left. I saw him lurking in the tree.
But I'm not there, so I can't exactly hand the 'Gear over to him.
[He squints a little more at the screen, because what the fuck happened in between the last time he'd seen Walter's fashion choices and now??]
[Morning-- picking up the Nulls and boarding the train.]
[Noon-- train ride is disrupted by discoveries of the dysfunctional laboratory Pokemon variety and also of the dysfunctional Elric family variety.]
[Afternoon-- a blurred rush to make it home, haul ass to the big-top, and get ready for the last performance of the anniversary month.]
[There's barely been time to think, let alone talk.]
[Which hasn't been a bad thing, all things considered... but now that evening has fallen and the Kricketots are chirping in the long grass all around the tent as everyone packs up and parts ways, calling it a well-earned night, it's probably time to ask.]
Hey.
[Still bedraggled and sweaty from baking in the miserable mixture of Rapidash fire, hot stage lights, and the sticky summer heat, Heather emerges from the dressing room with her shoes in one hand and a bottle of water from the cooler in the other, still in her costume tights but just wearing a tank-top above.]
[Picking up the Nulls doesn't even feel like it happened today, there's been so much else.]
[Honestly, they've just about been pushed right out of Envy's mind in favor of the other major surprise of the day. His half-brother, here, actually here and not just on those weekends.]
[...or, at least, MAYBE it's his half-brother. It could just as easily be the other one, and Alphonse hadn't exactly helped him figure it out. The fact that he doesn't know for sure is ALMOST as maddening as him being here at all. He doesn't know how he's supposed to be feeling about this one, doesn't know how angry he should be or what this one knows.]
[And he knows damn well that Ed had kept him in the dark on purpose.]
[Thinking about it had been way too frustrating, all he'd been able to do was throw himself into the performance tonight as hard as he could. There wasn't room to think about mystery brothers when he was flying fifty feet in the air trying to catch Lust's hands.]
[But now the performance is over, and there's nothing else to distract himself with. His legs feel distinctly like jelly, but he's still pacing when Heather comes out of the tent. He was so focused on his own thoughts that her question actually makes him jump...before he shoves his hands back into his pockets, scowling down at a scraggly patch of grass growing out of the dirt path instead of at her.]
[Envy finds himself in the house at night. It's dark and silent, even for nighttime. He tries to turn on a light but nothing happens. Looking closely, the house has the appearance of a place not lived in for years. There's dust. There are no personal knickknacks or photos as there are in life. The view out the window offers an overgrown and unkempt lawn. Broken fences.]
[In the dark, he goes from room to room, a building sense of dread overtaking him. They're all empty. The house creaks and groans in that way empty houses have. There's no hint of life at all. Upstairs is no different, and Envy finds himself taking the steps two at a time and flinging open bedroom doors to find the rooms devoid of even so much as furniture...]
[There's a commotion in the pool, and it's kind of been going on most of the morning.]
[Water's sloshing onto the paved walkway, and the Sharpedoes are all kind of clustered in one corner, watching in vague concern as the enormous Feraligatr dominates the majority of the pool with his anxiety laps. Every so often he stands to his full height, dripping and letting out low, worried croons deep in his throat, to try and see down the road.]
[Only to drop back down with a tremendous splash to resume his circling when, invariably, he doesn't see what he wants to see.]
[For once, Godzilla isn't the only Pokemon fretting himself to pieces.]
[Chimera doesn't know what to do, his trainer had been so worried and had run off without so much as a word, but Chimera knew that whatever he was doing wasn't good. He just hadn't been fast enough to keep up, and Lilith had gone after their hurried trainer instead.]
[But they still aren't back yet, and it's been much too long. MUCH too long.]
[But even as worried as he is, the ongoing commotion in the backyard is hard not to notice, even from the front. To distract himself from the urge to whip up his own private sandstorm all over the street, he figures...it's been going on all morning, maybe he should go look? So long as he made sure to keep an ear out for anyone returning home. Yes.]
[He's...kind of surprised that it's not the Sharpedos making all the splashing. And Godzilla looks just as worried as he feels.]
What happened? Did something happen? Do you know if something did?
[Chimera is definitely not as calm and collected as he usually is.]
As Darkness flew to Sharkhouse, accompanied by a handful of his children and carrying Assumption, his heart was deeply unbalanced.
On the one hand, he was parting ways with his trainer. Walter had raised him from a small Murkrow to the powerful Honchkrow he was now. Walter had trusted him immensely to act as his eyes from afar and as a strong fighter when they had engaged in battles. And on quiet nights, both in their nest and while walking their grounds, they would talk. About both casual things and more serious things. Darkness liked to think that he knew several secrets that precious few others would learn from Walter. So making the decision to stay in Johto, over leaving with him, had not been easily made.
But on the other wing, there was the reason he was staying. Finally, finally, he could be with Lyra and their children. Dropping Assumption off in the garden, he gave a loud cry to announce himself and his other kids, who were quick to chime in, calling for their mom.
Lyra would recognize her love's call anywhere, anytime.
Even though she'd been organizing her glittery collection, even that couldn't distract her from flying out to meet Darkness. And oh! Their children, too! She calls back, and as she does, the portion of the brood living at the house rise up as well, coming to see their father.
The entire sky above the yard is shortly filled with flapping and black feathers, between the lot of them.
"You've come, you're here!"
It may be a little hard to hear over all the other noise, but her caw is a delighted one.
[Lust's been looking for an excuse to strike up a particular conversation with Envy, but she hasn't been quite certain how. The shared nightmare experiences had been harrowing for everything, and god knew she was unsettled and withdrawn following their passing.]
[But when she has a reason to seek him out privately - or at least to seek him out specifically - she takes it. It's likely better to brooch an unrelated topic, to judge just how he's doing. Envy's moods can be difficult to discern, even for her. As bombastic and outspoken as he is, the exterior hid a myriad of depths and subtle moods.]
[She's holding a rather small black T-shirt in her hands when she finds him.]
I can't tell if this was originally yours or mine, but I've shrunken it horribly with the wrong laundry setting. It may still fit you, if it's yours, but I think it would be more comfortable - and less comical - on Wrath.
[Don't mind her, she's clearly just here to talk about a dryer mishap, nothing serious...]
[Envy had certainly retreated into being snappish and avoidant in the immediate aftermath--nobody would have been getting much of anything out of him then.]
[But he's calmed down some in the time since, letting his prickly walls back down to somewhat normal levels.]
[He's flipping through his 'Gear when Lust approaches him, only halfway paying attention to what he sees. He looks calm enough, and when she speaks he doesn't jump in surprise or scowl, simply groans at the sight of the shirt. So far, so good?]
[He certainly doesn't suspect anything.]
I can't tell either--might as well give it to Wrath. He could always use something new to wreck.
