[Envy knew that he was going to have to talk to France at some point today. He's fortunately calmed down some from earlier, but there's still something clearly off about him, a lingering tension and anger, when he responds.]
I was just...out. I'll be back soon.
[He visibly hesitates before continuing.]
I have to talk to you about something when I get there.
[France's eyebrows go up, mentally echoing the "out" part of the first half of the statement. The second part, though, gets a nod and a sobering of his expression.]
I'll be here.
[When Envy gets back, he'll find France sitting at the inn room's desk chair, contemplating something in his notebook.]
[When Envy walks in and closes the door behind him, he leans back on it heavily instead of going to France right away. One hand is still gripping the door handle, but he doesn't seem to notice, and he's staring with slightly narrowed eyes at the floor.]
[France turns around from the desk, although he remains sitting, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. He doesn't hide his observation of Envy's tension and downcast expression, his head tilting slightly to the side so that he's looking up at Envy from an angle.]
What happened?
[It's quiet and plain, not interrogative so much as an opening for whatever Envy wishes to start with.]
[France breathes in. He has come to the conclusion recently that Envy's life back home is not only unenviable (pardon the pun) but also deeply unhappy. It doesn't surprise him that this new person from Envy's world would be cause for anger and distress. It just makes France feel sad.]
You did the right thing. Going after a person when emotions are running high is never the best idea.
[It's said softly and clearly with the memory of France's own personal experiences. He seems to roll the question he voices next over before voicing it.]
[Something in Envy seems to snap at the question. His shoulders tense up and he just starts babbling, his voice a caustic mix of fury and confusion and hopelessness.]
Because I hate him, him and his brother and my bastard father for replacing me with them. That they could do what they did and then gain back the price they paid and kill their mistake and kill me for their happy ending...
[He hadn't wanted France to see him like this, that's one of the reasons why he'd called Heather instead. But it's coming out anyway, he can't stop himself.]

Hey, Envy, I don't see you around the inn at the moment. Are we doing dinner together this evening, or are you going to be out until late?

I'm back.
[And he has no idea where to even start.]

My...half brother. He showed up today.
[And just from the way Envy says 'half brother' like a curse, it's very clear that this is not a happy relationship.]
I wanted...I wanted to go after him. But I didn't. I called Heather, and she came over and helped keep me from going.
