[It's been a long time, but Envy remembers the argument he and Jimmy had had about Wrath. He has some idea of what this might be about, but he's not going to go giving it away if that idea is wrong.]
It wasn't half of Goldenrod's business, it was our group's problem to deal with.
[It comes out as more of a defensive snap than he'd intended, but he makes himself settle down a little, if only because he doesn't want to make a complete enemy out of one of Wrath's friends. But he's still frowning.]
[Five years isn't enough time to undo four hundred of homunculus business being homunculus business that outsiders wouldn't understand and would probably ruin if they could. Not for something as important as this had been; it's ingrained. Envy'd barely wanted to let Al get involved at first.]
We were helping him work through some of the shit that happened to him in our world. It took a while, but we were taking care of him and he was safe.
You know, I never had you pegged as a stupid fucking guy. Guess I was wrong.
That was the business of everybody who gives a shit about Wrath, and let me tell you, a lot of us care about him a bunch. And don't try and help him by locking him up and cutting off his contact from everybody but who we say is okay.
That's fucking brainwashing bullshit right there. How the fuck is that gonna help?
[Envy lets out a laugh, he can't help it. It's not a humored sound at all.]
You want brainwashing, you should've seen what it was we were trying to undo. He was already brainwashed, and he wasn't going to listen to any of us or anyone ELSE unless we did what we did. He ever mention anything to you about what things were like for him back in our world? Maybe about thinking he's not a person, or about having a master?
[He's clearly getting worked up, but he seems to catch himself, gritting his teeth and looking away from the camera for a second.]
We didn't know that many people would go looking for him when we took him. We told the ones we knew we could trust to understand what we were doing and not come wreck it.
He told me enough to figure out that he was raised with a whole lotta wrong ideas, yeah. By people who didn't have his interests in mind. And used him like some kind of slave or something. Me and Wrath are pretty fucking close. I take him camping. I teach him stuff. I look out for him. 'Cause none of us are in our worlds anymore, and we can't expect shit to work the same way. You don't get to close ranks on your special Bible club or whatever the hell you guys are just 'cause you think you know best.
'Cause you obviously didn't know jack shit about Wrath before doing this.
Yeah, and how was I supposed to know how close you and Wrath were? I knew you liked him, sure, and you gave a shit. But Wrath didn't name any names, and not one of us knew you, and we told people we knew.
I'm not saying we did this completely right. But it worked. He's not completely loyal to her or to all those wrong ideas, and now he can actually get somewhere. Hell, I wish someone had been around to force me to listen when I got here.
Because that kinda stuff is pretty obvious! Even if you didn't know before, it's not like I haven't been going crazy over the network about it! You could have said something then. I was out every fucking night, pretty sure he was hurt in the snow somewhere!
We panicked, okay! We didn't think that many people were gonna freak out about him being missing and start talking about doing sweeps of the city and making the people who took him pay.
If anyone had come busting down the door to get him, it would've all been for nothing.
[He pinches the bridge of his nose, knowing that he's just repeating himself.]
Look...I'm sorry. And you've got him back, he wasn't ever hurt or in danger or anything like that. We care a lot about him too. I screwed up when he got here, and back home, and I wanted to make it right.

About what?

...you mean about Wrath, don't you.
[His eyes narrow, and he glances away from the 'Gear briefly before he looks back.]
He find you?

Wouldn't say much, except where he was and that he couldn't get in touch with anybody 'because'.
You wanna tell me what the fuck is going on?
